Sometimes the Biggest Change Starts with You
Sometimes the Biggest Change Starts with You
It's human nature to look for answers outside ourselves.
Maybe the market is difficult.
Maybe work feels overwhelming.
Maybe a goal isn't coming together the way we hoped.
Or perhaps we're waiting for someone else to make the first move before we do.
While there are certainly circumstances beyond our control, one of the most valuable lessons our team has been discussing recently is this:
The biggest opportunity for change often starts with the person in the mirror.
At EO&A, we believe continuous learning is part of delivering exceptional service. Whether we're studying the housing market, improving our communication, or learning from respected coaches and business leaders, we're always looking for ideas that help us become better advisors, teammates, and people.
One recent leadership discussion challenged us to think differently about personal responsibility and the conversation stayed with us long after it ended.
Growth Begins with Ownership
When life isn't going the way we hoped, our first instinct is often to focus on external circumstances.
The economy.
The timing.
Other people.
Bad luck.
Sometimes those things absolutely play a role. But meaningful growth often begins when we pause long enough to ask:
What part of this can I control?
That's a much more empowering question because it shifts our focus away from blame and toward action.
Instead of asking, "Why is this happening to me?" we begin asking, "What's my next step?"
That small shift in perspective can change everything.
Three Things That Quietly Hold Us Back
During our discussion, three common patterns stood out. They don't always announce themselves, but they have a way of influencing our decisions more than we realize.
Fatigue
When we're physically or mentally exhausted, everything feels heavier.
Small problems seem much larger.
Patience wears thin.
Decision-making becomes more difficult.
Sometimes what feels like a motivation problem is really an energy problem. Taking care of yourself isn't a luxury, it's part of showing up well for the people who depend on you.
Fear
Growth usually requires change, and change often feels uncomfortable.
Fear can look like avoiding a difficult conversation, delaying an important decision, or waiting for the "perfect" time to act.
The challenge is that perfect timing rarely arrives.
More often, progress begins with taking the next right step, even when it feels uncertain.
Ego
This may be the hardest obstacle to recognize.
Experience is valuable, but believing we already have all the answers can prevent us from learning something new.
The people who continue growing throughout their lives are usually the ones who remain curious. They ask questions, seek feedback, and stay open to new perspectives.
Four Questions Worth Asking Yourself
Sometimes the best way to move forward isn't by finding more answers. It's by asking better questions.
Here are four that challenged our team:
- What am I tolerating that needs to change?
- What conversation have I been avoiding?
- What decision have I been putting off?
- If I could improve one thing about myself, what would have the biggest positive impact?
These questions don't only apply to work.
They can improve relationships.
Family life.
Health.
Finances.
And even major milestones like buying or selling a home, where thoughtful decisions and honest conversations often make the biggest difference.
Progress Doesn't Require Perfect Conditions
One of the most meaningful takeaways from this discussion was the reminder that we don't control every outcome.
Life will always bring unexpected challenges.
Markets change.
Plans shift.
Obstacles appear.
What we can control is how we respond.
Showing up with curiosity instead of blame.
Choosing action instead of avoidance.
Looking for solutions instead of excuses.
Those choices, repeated consistently over time, shape the kind of person we become.
Why This Matters to Our Team
At EO&A, learning isn't something we do once a year. It's part of how we approach our work every day.
We believe that becoming better listeners, communicators, problem-solvers, and leaders allows us to better serve the people who trust us during some of life's biggest transitions.
Whether someone is purchasing their first home, selling a longtime family property, relocating to a new community, or planning their next chapter, they deserve advisors who are committed to growing alongside them.
That's why we're always learning and occasionally sharing the lessons that have challenged our own thinking.
Because sometimes the biggest change doesn't begin with changing your circumstances.
It begins with changing yourself.
